Why Touring Your Wedding Venue Could Be the Most Important Step in Planning

Before you’ve booked your photographer, chosen your florist, or tasted a single piece of wedding cake, you’ll make one of the biggest decisions of your wedding planning journey: choosing your venue.
It’s where your story unfolds. Where your favorite people gather. Where you’ll laugh, cry, dance, and celebrate one of the most meaningful days of your life.
While websites, social media, and virtual tours are wonderful places to begin your search, nothing compares to stepping onto a property and experiencing it in person.
A venue tour is about much more than seeing a beautiful space. It’s your opportunity to imagine your wedding day, ask thoughtful questions, and discover whether a venue and the people behind it feel like the right fit.
At The Wells Estate, we believe every tour should leave you feeling informed, inspired, and genuinely excited about what’s ahead.

Look Beyond the Pretty Pictures
Let’s be honest, every wedding venue showcases beautiful photos. The ceremony backdrop is perfectly framed. The reception tables are styled to perfection. Every image captures a celebration at its very best.
But your wedding isn’t a photograph. It’s a full day of moments.
As you tour a venue, try shifting your perspective from “What does this space look like?” to “What will this space feel like?” Imagine arriving with your wedding party that morning. Picture your guests finding their seats before the ceremony. Think about where cocktail hour naturally unfolds and how everyone moves from one celebration to the next.
Beautiful spaces matter, but thoughtful experiences matter even more.
Tour Tip
Look beyond whether a venue is beautiful. Ask how it works.
The best venue teams won’t simply show you where your wedding could happen. They’ll help you understand how every part of your day comes together.

Questions Worth Asking
No matter which venues you’re touring, arriving with a list of questions can help you compare your options with confidence.
Some of our favorites include the following:
- What does a typical wedding day timeline look like here?
- What is included in the rental?
- Who will be my main point of contact?
- What happens if the weather changes?
- How much setup and breakdown assistance is provided?
- Are there any vendor requirements?
- What do couples tell you they loved most after their wedding?
- What makes your venue experience different?
Here’s one piece of advice from our team, though…
Don’t spend your entire tour looking down at your notebook. Write your questions down ahead of time. Email them before your visit if you’d like. Then give yourself permission to simply experience the property.
Sometimes the most important answers come from how a place makes you feel.
“So many couples are focused on remembering every question they wrote down that they forget to simply experience the property.”

Every Tour Begins With Your Vision
Before walking the property, our team wants to learn about you.
What moments are you dreaming about?
What feeling do you want your guests to have?
What have you saved on Pinterest that you can’t stop thinking about?
Those conversations shape the rest of the tour.
Over the course of about an hour, you’ll explore the Grand Arches, the Countryside Cathedral, the Estate House, the bridal suite, and the winding garden paths that connect each space. Along the way, we’ll discuss catering, bar service, timelines, and the details that help transform ideas into a personalized wedding weekend.
No two tours are exactly alike. Because no two couples are either.
“Every couple is different, and every wedding tells a different story.”

Meet the People Behind the Experience
The Wells Estate isn’t just a venue.
It’s a team.
For Venue Coordinator Allison, one of the most rewarding parts of every tour is hearing each couple’s vision begin to take shape.
“I love hearing where couples are in their planning journey and what they’re envisioning,” she says. “Watching their reactions as we move through each space is one of my favorite parts of every tour.”
Those conversations often lead to her favorite question:
“How do we create this?”
Whether it’s a unique ceremony idea, a personalized reception layout, or a meaningful family tradition, Allison loves helping couples explore what’s possible from the very first meeting.
“We have tried-and-true processes that help weddings run seamlessly,” she explains, “but almost every space can be reimagined to reflect each couple’s story.”
For Venue Director Jolene, the experience is just as personal.
“My favorite part is sharing a space I love with each couple,” she says.
It’s that love, for the property, the planning process, and the couples, that shapes every interaction.
“We want every couple to feel like they have a third teammate throughout their wedding planning journey, and that’s us.”

The Moment Everything Clicks
Ask Allison and Jolene what they notice during almost every tour, and you’ll hear the same answer.
The Grand Arches.
Photos simply can’t prepare you for their scale.
“The first time couples see them, there’s usually a pause,” Jolene says. “It’s a breath-catching moment when they realize just how grand the ceremony space really is.”
From there, the tour flows naturally from the Estate House out into the surrounding grounds. It’s here that the history of the property truly comes alive as you uncover the original 1913 Cathedral Arches, the very structures that inspired the design of our modern Countryside Cathedral.
Allison remembers many of today’s couples touring before the newest spaces had even been completed.
“They trusted the vision,” she recalls. “When they came back for their final walkthroughs, so many told us the same thing: ‘We’re so glad we did.'”
Sometimes you don’t realize you’ve found your venue until you’re standing in it.
